Am Hon Esplanade is one of the three places constructed by Nguyen dynasty to organize offering ceremonies. While Nam Giao Esplanade is dedicated to the Heaven offering and Xa Tac Esplanade was the place where the Earth and the God of Rice offering ceremony is held, the offering ceremony to those who lost their lives on the Citadel Fall is organized in Am Hon Esplanade.
Am Hon Esplanade was built in 1894, 9 years after the Citadel Fall had happened on the twenty-third day of the fifth lunar month, 1885. It is the place to commemorate countrymen and heroic soldiers who sacrificed and struggled against the French colonial force.
These days, the offering ceremony is organized not only at places of worship, pagodas, shrines, markets, but also families in Thua Thien Hue province. For Hue locals, the annual celebration of the Citadel Fall is a tradition. It is considered as a special ceremony, a fine tradition which imbues with Hue local spiritual culture.
Vietnamese and Thua Thien Hue historians believed that Am Hon Esplanade which was constructed for more than 100 years plays a meaningful role in the history of the country in general and Thua Thien Hue in particular. It also associates with a national memorable event, Citadel Fall. It is necessary for today and future generations to protect, renovate and promote historical and cultural values of the relic.
Am Hon Esplanade was recognized as a province-level relic on Decision No. 2568/QD-UBND on November 26, 2013.
