Being divided from Binh Tri Thien province in 1989, Thua Thien Hue province has a province-controlled level-I city (Hue city), 2 towns (Huong Thuy and Huong Tra) and 6 districts (Phong Dien, Quang Dien, Phu Vang, Phu Loc, A Luoi and Nam Dong) with 105 communes, 47 wards and townlets i.e. Phong Dien (Phong Dien district), Sia (Quang Dien district), Khe Tre (Nam Dong district), A Luoi (A Luoi district), Phu Da (Phu Vang district) and 02 district-controlled townlets namely Thuan An (Phu Vang district) and Lang Co (Phu Loc district).
Among ethnic minority groups living in Thua Thien Hue province, Cotu, Ta Oi, Bru-Van Kieu are considered as natives living in the west of province. Over long history, these ethnic groups have formed featured identity and culture. This creates a featured sub-culture region described as unity in diversity in the West of Thua Thien Hue province.
According to Resolution No. 1264//NQ-UBTVQH14 dated April 27, 2021, Thua Thien Hue has 9 district-level units (6 districts, 2 towns and 1 city) and 141 commune-level units (95 communes, 39 wards and 7 townlets) since July 1, 2021.
