Constructed in 1899 under Thanh Thai's reign, Dong Ba market is the largest commercial center in Hue city. Located on Huong river bank to the South West of the Imperial City, market’s frontage faces Tran Hung Dao street which was formerly called Truong Tien street - a main street of Hue city.
In fact, Dong Ba market's history dates back to the 19 century under Gia Long's reign. At first, it was located near Dong Ba gate and called Quy Gia (the returner) which refers to the return of Nguyen Dynasty to Phu Xuan (Hue city nowadays). Dong Ba market was destroyed by French in Hue Citadel fall in 1885. Emperor Dong Khanh had it reconstructed in 1887. Then, Emperor Thanh Thai moved Dong Ba market to near Huong river bank.
