Located in the north of Hue city, about 30km from Hue city center, Phong Dien district has the population of 105,597 habitants and the area of 945,66 km2 (according to Resolution No. 1314/NQ-UBTVQH15 dated November 30, 2024 of the National Assembly’s Standing Committee on the rearrangement of district- and commune-level  administrative unis in Hue city for 2023 – 2025 period). Totally, there are 6 wards and 6 communes. Eco-city is anticipated to be developed together with Phong Dien natural reserve in the west of national road 1A.

Phong Dien borders with Hai Lang district (Quang Tri province) to the west and northwest. To the northeast, southeast and south, the district shares its borders with the East Sea, Quang Dien and A Luoi district, respectively. It is the locality where many national important traffic routes such as national road 1A and trans-Vietnam railway cross. Besides, the East-west economic corridor facilitates local economic exchange.

Situated in a narrow strip of land limited by O Lau and Bo river, Phong Dien’s terrain is diverse with mountain to the southwest, plain, coastal and lagoon region.

The mountainous area has the average altitude of about 1000m and the slope of 35o. It has the potentials for developing specialized farming areas and perennial crops. Local rich alluvial land which is made up by Bo River and O Lau River stretches along the national road 1A, is appropriate for growing rice and short term industrial plants. In addition to forestry, particularly protection forest, local coastal areas and lagoon is ideal for shrimp breeding.

Thanks to local natural resources, Phong Dien town is capable of developing comprehensive agriculture including farming, forestry and aquaculture in commodity production direction. It is also home to diverse minerals such as limestone, peat, mineral water, facilitating the development of local industry.

When it comes to tourism, Phong Dien has great potential. There are many famous places of interest located in the district such as Phuoc Tich ancient village, Thanh Tan mineral water springs, Hoa My battlefields, Giac Luong pagoda, etc. Many traditional handicraft villages can also be found in Phong Dien, for example, jewelry making (Ke Mon and Dien Mon village), forging (Phong Hien commune), pottery making (Phuoc Tich village), etc.

In recent years, Hue city  has made every effort to create favorable investment environment as well as promote Phong Dien's socio-economic development. In this attempt, district’s industry, infrastructure, electricity network, irrigation, water drainage and telecommunication are invested.

On the basis of local strategic geographical position, sufficient natural resources and good investment environment, Phong Dien is expected to become the key economic region in the north of Hue city in the near future.
