Reviewing the severe flood in Central region 20 years ago, the Central Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control and the People's Committee of Thua Thien Hue province co-organized the international workshop themed "Water-related disaster risk management in Central region of Vietnam" in Hue city on November 29th.

The international workshop brought localities and locals an opportunity to share experience in dealing with the devastating flood in 1999; post-disaster reconstruction as well as the role of civil society organizations and local communities in reducing disaster risks in Vietnam. On this occasion, foreign localities, organizations and agencies also proposed suitable solutions to prevent disaster risk in Vietnam in the time to come.

       At the workshop, the representative of Directorate of Natural Disaster Prevention and Control briefly reported 1999 flood, actions, lessons of dealing with disasters in Central regions and key measures to be taken in the coming time. Delegates listened to the experience in coping with disasters of Thua Thien Hue province and JICA Vietnam. The role of civil society organizations and local communities in disaster risk management in Vietnam, achievements and future orientation were also presented by DWF's representative.
