On August 1 morning, Hai Van Gate was officially opened. The ceremony was held by Hue Monuments Conservation Center, Danang city’s Department of Culture and Sport, units and agencies.
Hai Van Gate is located on the top of Hai Van pass. The area jointly managed by Lang Co townlet, Phu Loc district, Thua Thien Hue province and Hoa Hiep Bac ward, Lien Chieu district, Danang city. It is about 90km from Hue city and 28km from Danang city.
Hai Van Gate was built under Tran dynasty and was renovated under Nguyen dynasty (Emperor Minh Mang’s reign, 1826). The words “Hai Van Quan” (Hai Van Gate) was engraved on the gate facing Thua Thien while “Thien ha de nhat hung quan” (the best place of interest in the world) can be found on the side towards Quang Nam province. “Minh Menh that nien cat nhat tao” which means constructing under the reign of Minh Menh Emperor (1826) was noted on a corner.
Situated on the top of Hai Van pass, Hai Van Gate is a military headquarters whose cultural and historical values are recognized. This famous place of interest also contributes to local tourism development.

At an altitude of 490km, Hai Van Gate consists of military structures such as fortress, warehouse, cannon, etc. Under the reign of Nguyen dynasty, Hai Van Gate was an important entrance to Hue capital. Therefore, Nguyen dynasty gathered force and weapons in Hai Van Gate. According to Dai Nam Thuc Luc, the royal dynasty had four Huu Sai teams and 2 Ung Sai teams transport weapons to Hai Van Gate.
This monument is appreciated in terms of culture and history, contributing to tourism development in Thua Thien Hue and Danang city.
On April 14, 2017, Hai Van Gate was recognized as a national relic on Decision No.1531/QD-BVHTTDL.
The monument was jointly conserved by Thua Thien Hue province and Danang city in late 2021. The amount invested was VND 42 billion which was equally shared by Danang city and Thua Thien Hue province.
Currently, the project has been completed. The two localities reached an agreement on exploiting its values. Particularly, the admission is free until an appropriate price is applied.
In addition to values in terms of history and military, Hai Van gate is situated in a favorable position in trans-Vietnam journey. Coming to Hai Van gate, visitors have a chance to enjoy the beauty of mountain, pass and poetic natural scenery.
