Although it is only a small remote pagoda, Lord Nguyen Phuc Chu sent monk Nguyen Thieu, an eminent monk from Guang Dong (China) to work as its abbot in 1695. Previously, monk Nguyen Thieu was asked to be back to China and invite Venerable Thach Liem to Vietnam for preaching.
Having established the ordination in Thien Lam pagoda, Venerable Thach Liem returned and stayed in Thien Mu pagoda for a while. Later, on his way to Quang Nam province, he dropped by Pho Thanh pagoda. This was mentioned in a book called Hai Ngoai Ky Su.
Monk Nguyen Thieu placed a stone Guanyin statue from China which is 1m33 high in the pagoda. Currently, this statue, the other two wooden Amitabha Buddha statues and a bronze bell cast in 1672 still can be found in Ha Trung pagoda.
The pagoda was recognized as a province-level cultural historic relic on decision No. 2373/QD-UBND dated October 13th, 2006 of the People's Committee of Thua Thien Hue province.
