Review workshop of “Improving the resilience of vulnerable coastal communities to climate change related impacts in Vietnam” project

On July 10, 2024, a workshop was held by GCF Project Management Board to review “Improving the resilience of vulnerable coastal communities to climate change related impacts in Vietnam” project. Leaders of Thua Thien Hue Agriculture and Rural Development Department, Irrigation Department, the representatives of relevant departments, the People’s Committee of 53 communes of Phong Dien district, Quang Dien district, Phu Loc district, Phu Vang district, Huong Tra town and Hue city attended the workshop.

The project sponsored by Green Climate Fund via United Nations Development Program is carried out in Thua Thien Hue province from 2018 to 2024. It consists of three components. Regarding to flood resilient house, 581 houses were constructed between 2018 and 2021 and 150 more were built in 2022 – 2024 stage. The total number of houses built so far is 731. Turning to the second component, mangrove forest planting, 22 hectares of mangrove forest were planted in Huong Phong town, Hue city so far. The final component, disaster risk information and data management was jointly carried out by the project management board, General Department of Natural Disaster Prevention and UNDP experts. Project management board of Thua Thien Hue province was in charge of training activities. Four province-level training courses and 80 management training classes were organized. Disaster risk assessment on the basis of commune-level community was completed.

So far, the project has been successfully implemented thanks to the guiding of leaders of the People’s Committee of Thua Thien Hue province, the effective cooperation of departments, agencies and the entire political system, the responsible management board. The project has contributed to improving the resilience of local houses at risk of climate change; stabilized life and safety condition for locals living in disaster-prone area; enhanced forest coverage; improved the quality of mangrove forest which absorbs carbon, reduces greenhouse gas emission and increases biodiversity; established and referred to disaster risk information as well as climate risk information during making decision and plan.
