(TTH Portals) - On July 25, 2024, the Vice Chairman of the People’s Committee of Thua Thien Hue province Phan Quy Phuong had a meeting with a delegation from PeaceTrees Vietnam headed by the Executive Director Claire Yunker. Leader representatives of relevant departments and agencies attended the meeting.

Introducing PeaceTrees Vietnam, Ms. Claire Yunker – the Executive Director kindly informed that PeaceTrees Vietnam is a non-governmental organization whose headquarters is located in Seatle, Washington, USA. This organization has supported the community and residents badly affected by the aftermath of war in Quang Tri province through humanitarian explosive clearance actions.

PeaceTrees covers 5 main categories i.e. mine clearance, mine accident prevention, support victim, post-clearance development and citizen diplomacy. The first two components are sponsored by the U.S. Ministry of Foreign Affairs while others are aided by the U.S organizations, businesses and individuals.

Since 2020, PeaceTrees Vietnam has cooperated with Quang Binh province. Over nearly 30 years, PeaceTrees Vietnam received the effective support and recognition of the authority and locals of localities where these humanitarian actions were taken.

To support localities affected by war aftermath in Central Vietnam, PeaceTrees Vietnam wished to establish cooperative relation with Thua Thien Hue by signing the agreement on clearing mine and explosives in Thua Thien Hue province to ensure the safety of people who are living, farming and carrying our socio-economic development program; raise the awareness of residents, particularly children of preventing explosive-related accident; support explosive victims by giving direct support and granting scholarships for their children; provide post-clearance support; lead visitors and sponsors to visit and learn more about culture, people exchange to strengthen the cooperative relation and call for sponsors.

Speaking at the meeting, Vice Chairman Phan Quy Phuong kindly informed that Thua Thien Hue has called for social resources, particularly international sponsors to clear explosive ordiances. However, there is still a large area of land contaminated with explosives.

The provincial leader kindly requested PeaceTree Vietnam to soon carry out programs/projects as committed to minimize the danger and impact of explosives, raise the living standard of the community and those affected by explosives via specific programs/projects.

“Explosive clearance will ensure the safety of people during living and farming; enable socio-economic development program and raise public living standard”, said Vice Chairman Phan Quy Phuong.
