Due to its geographical position, climate, hydrology, soil and other manmade factors, Thua Thien Hue's flora belongs to tropical ecotone. It is the place where northern and southern floras met in Tertiary Period.

There is a variety of plants and eco-systems in the province. Forest, hill, delta, sand dune, lagoon and coastal area are local main eco-systems. However, forest, mainly tropical ever-green rainforest takes up the largest area. Thua Thien Hue forest directly or indirectly brings locals benefits in the fields of economy, society and national defense.

Regards to plant resources, forest and hill provide medicinal trees, flower, and ornamental plants. In addition to forest, industrial trees, cereals, and vegetables are planted to help locals, especially people from ethnic minority groups to reduce poverty. Cereals, vegetable and fruits are grown in coastal delta. People also grow flower, ornamental plants and medicinal trees, etc. There are only a small number of plants grown in the coastal and lagoon areas. In addition to aquatic floras, mangrove forest and some floras are planted for environment purpose.

Up to now, scientists found 43 rare plants in Thua Thien Hue province. They are classified by threat, i.e. class E (1 specie), class V (10 species), class R (16 species), class T (6 species) and class K (10 species). There are also many rare fruit trees need to be further protected and developed such as Thanh Tra pomelo, Huong Can tangerine, Thanh Dieu sugarcane, etc.
